According to the IUCN red list of threatened species, the status of Rhinatrema bivittatum is ‘least concern’.
Recent fieldwork - data largely unpublished - suggests that it may not be as rare in the wild as previously thought. However, it has a smaller distribution than previously understood.
Although it should not be a major conservation concern if its primary rainforest habitat is preserved, more investigation is clearly needed.
As noted by Gower and Wilkinson (2005), there is a serious lack of field-study details and quantitative data for most caecilians, so their conservation status is generally poorly known and requires more precise assessments in the future.
