There is no evidence that Trentepohlia abietina has any impact on trees.
Other Trentepohlia species produce unsightly red or orange growths on artificial surfaces, which are frequently considered an aesthetic and practical nuisance. This can have economic implications if removal or more frequent restoration is required.
The unsightly red or orange streaks on buildings are a major problem in urban areas in more humid parts of the tropics and temperate regions, including western Ireland where Trentepohlia iolithus is common on buildings and is known locally as the ‘red fungus’ or ‘red rust’.
