The gatekeeper is a summer butterfly, active between July and August. Males and females are very similar, but males have an additional band on the upperside of their wings which are golden with a brown border. It is a widespread species throughout the UK that mostly feeds on brambles and thistles. Male wingspan 37-43 mm. Female wingspan 42-48 mm.
