Marbled white, Melanargia galathea

The marbled white has black and white markings that resemble spots on the upperside of its wings. Males’ underside wings are greyer, than that of females which are a lighter brown. Despite its name, it is more closely related to the subfamily commonly called the ‘browns’. Like most butterflies, it emerges during warm and sunny weather. Male wingspan approximately 53 mm. Female wingspan approximately 58 mm.
