Red admiral, Vanessa atalanta

The red admiral is one of the easily recognizable butterflies. The upperside of its wings is black with orange-red bands, and white speckled tips. Due to the varying shades of brown on its underside, it is exceptionally good at camouflage. Originally a migrant, now it is a relatively well established butterfly in the UK. Wingspan ranges from 64-78 mm.
